How to get to Florianópolis

Plane, bus or car: how to reach the island and cross over from the mainland.

Updated on October 7, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 6, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

Florianópolis lies on the coast of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Most of the municipality is on Santa Catarina Island, linked to the mainland by three bridges: the historic Hercílio Luz Bridge, from 1926, and the Colombo Salles (1975) and Pedro Ivo Campos (1991) bridges, which carry most of the vehicle traffic, according to Wikipedia.

By plane

Hercílio Luz International Airport (FLN) is in the south of the island and handles domestic and international flights. The current terminal was opened in 2019 by the concessionaire Floripa Airport. From the airport, continue by taxi, ride-hailing app, rental car or bus.

By bus

Intercity, interstate and international coaches arrive at the Rita Maria Bus Terminal (Terminal Rodoviário Rita Maria), downtown, near the island end of the bridges. From there, city buses leave from TICEN, the downtown integration terminal. See getting around.

By car

The BR-101 highway runs along the Santa Catarina coast and passes through the neighboring municipalities of São José and Palhoça. To get onto the island, use the Colombo Salles and Pedro Ivo Campos bridges. From downtown, state highways lead to the North (SC-401), the East and the South.

From elsewhere in South America

Many Argentines, Uruguayans and Chileans come by plane, on direct or connecting flights, or by car and bus along the BR-101. Check the documents you need and the entry rules for foreign vehicles on official channels before you travel.
