Florianópolis welcomes visitors from Brazil and abroad all year round, with many tourists from Argentina, Uruguay and Chile in summer. Most of the municipality is on Santa Catarina Island, and its beaches spread out on every side. That is why planning your base and your itinerary well makes all the difference.
1. Documents
Brazilians travel with a photo ID. Foreign visitors need a valid passport and, depending on nationality, a visa. Citizens of Mercosur countries can usually enter with their national ID card, but the rules change: check the Itamaraty Consular Portal before you travel.
2. When to go
Summer (December to March) brings the warmest sea and a crowded island with slow traffic. The shoulder months tend to be quieter. Details in when to go.
3. How many days
Three days cover the Lagoa, the Joaquina dunes, a beach in the North and downtown with the bridge. With five to seven days you can fit in Campeche Island, hiking trails and the Azorean villages. See the 2- to 7-day itineraries.
4. Which region to stay in
The most important decision of the trip. The North, the Lagoa, the East, the South and downtown each have a very different feel. Compare them in where to stay.
5. Getting there and getting around
The airport (FLN) is in the south of the island. The Rita Maria bus station is downtown. On the island a car helps a lot, but there are integrated buses, taxis and ride-hailing apps. See how to get here and getting around.
6. Safety, sea and health
Ocean beaches have currents; trails require some preparation. Read the safety guide before you head out.
7. Must-dos
- A day at Lagoa da Conceição and on the Joaquina dunes.
- Sunset with the Hercílio Luz Bridge lit up.
- Oysters in Ribeirão da Ilha or Santo Antônio de Lisboa.
