The seasons on the island
| Season | What it is usually like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Dec. to Mar.) | hot and humid, pleasant sea, crowded island and slow traffic | beach lovers who like a buzz |
| Autumn (Mar. to Jun.) | mild days, fewer people, sea still good early on | beach time without the crowds |
| Winter (Jun. to Sep.) | cool, south wind, cold sea | hiking, food, culture |
| Spring (Sep. to Dec.) | warming days, quieter until November | hiking and peaceful beaches |
High season
From Christmas to Carnival, the island receives many Brazilian and foreign tourists, especially Argentines, Uruguayans and Chileans. Accommodation gets more expensive, restaurants fill up and roads such as the SC-401 in the north, as well as the routes in the south and east, jam up.
Winter is worth it too
With the sea cold, winter is the season for hikes such as the Lagoinha do Leste trail, for food and for the Azorean villages. It is also when the south wind clears the air for photos of the Hercílio Luz Bridge.
Rain
It rains in every season. Have a plan B: see Florianópolis on a rainy day.
