Florianópolis safety

Sea, trails, sun and your belongings: what to do to enjoy the island worry-free.

Updated on October 7, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 6, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

Florianópolis is popular with families and solo travelers alike. Most visitor problems have to do with the sea, trails and sun, and with theft in crowded places. Simple precautions prevent almost all of them.

The sea

The beaches of the East and South face the open ocean, with strong waves and rip currents. Those in the North, facing the North Bay, are usually calmer.

  • Go into the water near the lifeguards of the fire department (Corpo de Bombeiros) and respect the flags.
  • If a current pulls you, do not swim against it: swim parallel to the beach and signal for help by raising your arm.
  • Stay away from rocky headlands and rocks when there is a heavy swell (ressaca).
  • Do not go into the sea after drinking.

Trails

Trails such as Lagoinha do Leste and Naufragados require some preparation. Start early, carry water, wear closed shoes, tell someone your route and never come back after dark. See hiking trails.

Sun

The summer sun is strong. Use sunscreen and a hat, and drink water. Avoid the hours of strongest sun, from late morning to mid-afternoon.

Belongings

  • Take only what you need to the beach and never leave anything unattended on the sand.
  • Do not leave anything visible inside the car.
  • At night, take a taxi or ride-hailing app back to your accommodation.
