Avenida Beira-Mar Norte is Florianópolis’s urban waterfront. Built on reclaimed land on the North Bay, between downtown and the Agronômica neighborhood, it has a promenade, a cycle path, sports courts and outdoor gyms, according to Wikipedia. Locals use it every day to walk, run and cycle.
Why go
- Bridge views: from the promenade, the Hercílio Luz Bridge appears side-on, with the mainland behind it.
- Late afternoon: the sky over the bay changes color at sunset.
- New Year’s Eve: Wikipedia notes that the city’s main New Year’s party usually takes place on Beira-Mar. For dates and the program, rely only on the city’s official announcement.
Not a swimming beach
Beira-Mar is for strolling. To go into the sea, head for the island’s beaches: see the beaches guide.
Practical tips
- Walk in the late afternoon to see the bridge light up.
- Use the cycle path, but watch out for pedestrians.
- It is not a swimming beach: head to the island's beaches to swim.
