Designed by Brigadier José da Silva Paes and built by enslaved people, it was one of the corners of the North Bay defensive triangle in the 18th century, together with the forts of Anhatomirim and Ratones. Together they were meant to protect Santa Catarina Island and Portuguese rule in the south.
