Lagoinha do Leste is a secluded beach in the south of the island, with an S-shaped lagoon between the hills and the sea. There is no road: you get there on foot or by boat, according to Wikipedia. The area is protected as a municipal park.

The two trails

Trail What it is like
Via Pântano do Sul shorter, with more steep climbs and descents; many people use it on the way back
Via Matadeiro longer, considered easier and more scenic; usually chosen for the way there

Both cross forested hills and headlands with sea views. The highlight is the lookout above the beach, where the most famous photo of the south of the island is taken.

On the beach

  • Open, strong sea: there are no permanent lifeguards. Go into the water with great care.
  • The lagoon: the water in the lagoon is usually calmer, but there are no lifeguards there either.
  • No facilities: bring everything you need and take your trash back.

By boat

Boats may leave from Armação or Pântano do Sul, depending on the sea and the season. Check locally.
