Naufragados is the southernmost beach in Florianópolis, about 43 km from downtown. A three-kilometer trail separates the beach from the road, passing waterfalls and the ruins of an old cassava-flour mill; you can also get there by boat from Caieira da Barra do Sul, according to Wikipedia.
The name
Naufragados means “shipwrecked”, and Wikipedia records two explanations: the wreck of a ship from Juan Díaz de Solís’s expedition in 1516, whose survivors, such as Aleixo Garcia, lived among the Carijó people; or the wreck of two Portuguese ships off the beach in 1753.
What to do
- Forest trail: a beautiful route with streams and shade.
- Beach: a curve of pale sand, green sea and few people.
- Headlands and lighthouse: the southern tip of the island looks out over the South Bay and the mainland.
How to get there
By car or bus to Caieira da Barra do Sul, at the end of the road in the south of the island, then the trail or the boat. See getting around and hiking trails.
Practical tips
