Ingleses do Rio Vermelho is a district in the northeast of the island, about 35 km from downtown. Wikipedia attributes the name (“the English”) to the wreck of an English ship in the mid-18th century: some of the crew are said to have stayed on to live in the area. Today it is the Florianópolis beach with the largest resident population.
What the beach is like
- A long bay, with the sea usually calmer at the ends.
- Plenty of facilities: hotels, pousadas, bars and restaurants along the waterfront.
- Dunes: between Ingleses and Santinho there is a dune field also used for sandboarding.
