With about 8.5 km of shoreline, Moçambique is the longest beach on Santa Catarina Island, according to Wikipedia. It runs from Barra da Lagoa in the south to Morro das Aranhas in the north, with no buildings on the seafront: just sand, dunes and the forest of Rio Vermelho State Park.

The name

The name does not come from the African country. Wikipedia explains that it comes from “moçambique”, another name for the tatuíra, a small crustacean (mole crab) common in the sand. The beach was once called Praia Grande and Praia da Lagoa.

Who it suits

  • Anyone seeking peace and quiet: even in summer, some stretches are almost empty.
  • Walkers: the firm sand is perfect for long walks.
  • Surfers: the open sea produces waves all year round.

How to get there

The main access is via the SC-406, with entrances along short trails through the park’s forest. Barra da Lagoa is the nearest place for supplies.

Practical tips

  • Bring water and shade: there are almost no facilities.
  • Stay near the lifeguard posts to swim.
  • Great for long walks.
