Armação do Pântano do Sul, or simply Armação, is about 25 km from downtown. Today it is one of the main artisanal fishing hubs in Florianópolis, according to Wikipedia, sharing the beach with tourism and surfing.
The name and its history
The name comes from the old armações baleeiras (whaling stations), where whale oil was produced to light the cities. Hunting drove the southern right whale almost to extinction; today the species is protected. The Church of Sant’Anna, built in 1772, is the beach’s main historic landmark.
