Campeche Island lies in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1.6 km off Campeche Beach. It is about 1.6 km long and 500 meters wide, and it is one of Florianópolis’s postcard images thanks to its clear water and white sand, according to Wikipedia. It also holds a major archaeological heritage, with rock carvings thousands of years old.
Protection and visitor limit
The island is protected as archaeological and landscape heritage, and IPHAN (the national heritage institute) limits the number of landings per day. Wikipedia records a limit of up to 800 people a day in December, January and February and 770 in other months of the season. In 2025, a municipal decree declared the island a conservation unit of the Natural Monument type.
How to get there
By boat only. Boats leave from Armação, Barra da Lagoa and Campeche. Because of the daily limit, in high season it is worth arriving early or booking ahead with licensed operators.
